Well im looking into a big bore for my 400. I have a 41 fcr power roll carb and was wondering what it would run best on, 416, 427, 440? I would also be putting a pipe and a cam in it. The pipe cant be super loud I was thinking an HMF? And for the cam a hotcam stage 2? I ride mostly trails and gncc stuff but im going to the dunes this summer so the power has to get me though that trip. Would I have to change anything else along with the motor and pipe to have it run at its peak? Thanks, Ryan

well, if it were me id get the 416. pretty good power gain and a lot more reliable than a 440. alot of times 440s tend to blow up, but it all depends on how good its built. dont quote me on this but ive herd that a 427 aint much better than a 416, power wise anyway. good luck.

I heard the same thing I just wanted other imput, basicly im just looking for the power to get me through the 3ft of mud and up the steep rocky hills around here. I wanted the most power for the money.

That crap about 440s is bull. I know 416s that have had nothing but problems, compared to my 440 which has been great. Whether it be a 416 or a 440, a poorly built engine is what it is. Build it right and you will not have any problems.

For your question, I would go with the 440, personally. Any of them can be built to be fast. It is really just up to which you prefer to choose.

You guys think a nicely built 440 with a cam, pipe and the 41 mm carb would hang with a 450r or still get eaten alive?

If you need a quiet pipe I wouldn't go with HMF. Their one of the loudest.

My stroker has no problem hanging w/ and beating lightly modded 450's.

A well built EX can hang w/the newer macines and still be plenty reliable.

Agreed. A poorly built engine is a poorly built engine, it doesn't matter what bore size. Still, the 416 is the best bang for the buck. If you want to do a 440, first you need to figure out how deep your pockets are and how much time you have.

Im building my car the same time this is going down so I cant spend a ton of cash on it. Im looking into the 426 out of all of them. When I bought my carb it took the company 6 months to get it to me and they "forgot" to tell me it needs to be a modded motor to make it not bog out. The guy I talked to said it would run amazing on a stock motor and pipe, ya he was wrong. So moral of the story, I get a deal on either a 416 or a 427 kit from them at their cost and the shop I bought it from will cut his price in half because it took so long. So its going to be 500 without the pipe or cam, I dont think thats to bad. I would go with a 440 but building up a big block 502 isnt cheap :ermm:

If I was in your shoes I would get an 11:1 426 kit, an 02 CRF timing chain, stage 2 hotcam, and a slip on pipe. If you want to it to be reliable as possible think about an HD stud kit too.

The stud kit just for insurance? Do they blow out alot? I know my real motor needs the HD studs just for the high horsepower, is it the same with the quads?

You could probably get away with using stock studs at 11:1, but I don't think I would try. They're not that much money and it'll be one less thing you'll have to worry about.

in my experience with mud, my stage 2 cam even with a 440 just didnt cut as well as i liked, i've only been tot he mud like 3 times, but i had a 426 with a stage 1, that would hang no problem, but with a 440 and stage 2 just didnt feel the same in the mud, but the sand.......well thats just different, im mpretty sure the cam had all to do with it.

anyways i put a 05 450r carb on a stock motor i think they're 42mm and it ran awesome, you have to jet it right to get it to quit bogging a 41 on a stock motor would be good, but it will be really good on a worked motor
