i dont know if it will work however a 400ex rear shock is just as good as a 450 rear dont know why you want to change it unless its a aftermarket for a good price??

Sure it will bolt up. Is it right? Absolutely not. The stock 450R rear shocks is about an inch shorter than a stock 400ex shock. The fronts althought not perfect are by far a better match than the rears are.

But using that shock may be a good idea. Its no better than a stock ex shock the ex shock is said to be a little better then the 450r shock but if it lowers the rear a little it would be like having a linkage a inch lower like elka so it wouldnt be that bad of a thing to do. Only thing is air box mite get smashed not sure. I seen a ex with the r shock and it looked pritty good.

The shaft might be shorter in the R shock so it would bottom easier to but not sure.
