I am trying to make a decision, sell my 2005 400ex and buy a 2006 450R. Or should i keep my EX and invest some money in proformance parts and skids.

What is your riding style, or type? Basically, what kind of riding do you do?

both are great bikes, i have both and am trying to sell my 2006 450r. it is geared a little high for the trail and likes to rev high. that makes getting over logs a little tricky. it takes a lot more clutch and throttle finesse than the ex. i feel more at home on the ex as it has aftermarket suspension. if i didn't need a new vehicle, the r would stay. i just donn't want to be making a payment on vehicle so the r must go...

If you ride trails / tight stuff, I would stay with the EX. It has all the power you'll need (with a few mods)

If you ride track / open, I'd look at the R.

But before buying the R, I'd suggest you talk with Pappy. He seems a tad.... disappointed with the R.

basic trail riding i would stick with the EX..... and it can hang with any utility.

Rs are really nice but from what i have seen they dont handle trail riding real well.trees and rocks seem to beat them up.

i wish i had both......but im happy to have my 400ex.

what ever you do put a swingarm skid plate on it....a friend hit a rock and blow the chain....took out his side cover.....oh he had just ordered a new frontend because he had hit a tree and bent his a-arm.....im hoping to buy his front shocks:)

Ultimately, it boils down to what fits you, what you like, your riding style and where you ride.

I had the debate earlier this year, mod my 400 or buy a 450. I kept the 400 and now it's faster than a 450.:D

What cam, piston combo does everybody recommend? Mine is the IMS kit with 10.5 piston and stage 1 hot cam, full HMF exhaust, ported head it could use some more power. THANKS

I'm running a Powroll stroker w/a stg 3 Hotcams. Falicon connecting rod, JE 10.8:1 piston (the stroker bumps the comp to just over 11:1), ported head and a slip-on. Still running the stock carb unfortunately.

Don't know personally about the 450R carb, I'll probably go with a 39mm FCR. I don't have any HP or TQ numbers either, it runs strong and pulls away from my buddies 450R in every gear.:macho

WOW... I have a lot in common with the above comments!

I too have both... And to be completely honest... I LOVE MY EX! (And I am not talking about my Ex-girlfriend):D

I bought my EX in '99... Still a lot of fun! And I still ride it... Often!

As for the 450R... A lot quicker and lighter than the 416.

Stock suspension on the '06 450R had to be revalved just for me to enjoy the 450R... And there were some other issues to boot... Do you want me to complain... I mean "comment" more?

Good luck, and best wishes!
