The bigger difference is definitely gonna come from the cam you use. I've used web cams quite a lot and they will explain which grind makes power where when you buy them...

IMO....Athena 434 kit, Web Cams 540/539 grind, 39-40 FCR, 400EX intake boot. and a Dyna ignition. That'll give the bike alot more @ss!!!

thats basically what I have on one of mine but its a 450 stroker. The carb is definitely a big difference maker on the Z's. Before I had mine fully built I put just the Web Cam and a FCR39 on it and it was a huge difference! only problem is carbs are expensive, I think like $500

The FCR's have come down quite a bit. I seen one on here for $175!!!! Matter of fact i've seen alot of them go for $225 or less.

For your original question above. The stock piston with the DRZ base gasket mod bumps the compression up .9 of a point making it approx 12.2-1. The new style hotcams with the decomp on the exhaust is geared towards an all around power improvement with a very strong low and mid range improvement.
Hope that helps.

That's awesome that FCR's have went down so much. I haven't had to deal with it lately cause the Honda's come with them stock...

I would say the 450 is definitely "better" - would make more power - but again its gonna be a good bit more expensive, having to buy the rod. I would say a 435 or 440 kit would be plenty good. The couple extra cc's isn't where you're gonna get most of your power. Most of you're power is gonna come from the head work and the cam, and again the carbs make a big difference on those bikes. You could probably do like Sprinterx said and just bump the compression up with the DRZ base gasket, FCR39, a cam, and some good head work. you'd save money on the piston and boring and labor to do that stuff and you'd see a huge difference!

It all depends on how much you want to spend

If youv'e got an 05 or newer quad, box up the frt & rear shocks and send them to Laz @ GT Thunder for a make-over. Also, get some +2 A-arms and a G-Force rear axle. You'll be amazed at how much better your quad will perform with good suspension.
If you must add engine performance, some good cheap ways to get more HP are as follows: do the DRZ base gasket mod, drill out the peashooter in the stk muffler, remove the air box lid and get a jet kit with needle from Alba. After this it starts to get spendy and your almost better off waiting till you can do the whole carb, cams, exhaust, filter, porting thing at once. Just my $.02.

Susupension would be smart to look into but it seems like its the engine mods you're interested in...

For about $1000 you could do a the cam of your choice, FCR39, and a good FULL exhaust, a good head pipe, especially on a built motor is really what counts on an exhaust

Cams = $250
Carb = $250 (used to be more but that's what they're claiming...)
Exhaust = $400-500

You could sponsor me! :D

Seriously I would do full exhaust, I & E cams, and like a Noss or Pro Design intake.
