i know that either having 18 or 20 inch tyres will alter gearing , but exactly how much ?
what size wheels are best suited to which types of riding ??

8" for mx 9" for trails

In general what Jerry said is right, thats the general rule of thumb. But I do see some people run a 20in tire on an 8in rim. The point of that is to give the tire a little more flex when hitting bumps, ruts, etc. The downfall with that is that there will be more roll in the tires when you corner.

ideally. i like to run a 8" x 18" - 9" x 20" - 10" x 21, 22" it's less side wall flex in the corners.
