Good basic, simple, cheap set-up.
12.5:1 Wiseco Piston & Stage 2 Hot Cam

But there are MANY options

Would a 11:1 piston work with a stage II hotcam?

Sure, just less compression.
Your bottom-mid would suffer the most with less compression.

Stock is 9.1:1. 11:1 is a popular choice.

ETA: ignore this, I'm thinking of a different engine

Im going with a 11:1 piston, but is there a specific stage II cam with different ratio matches to the piston or is it just a general Stage II cam? Plus, will I gain low end and mid range power?

"Stage 2" is a specific label used by Hotcams. Most companies use other labels to identify their cams.

The GT Thunder, White Brothers Track, WEB 450/451, and Hotcams Stage 2 (particularly the old version) are all pretty similar cams, specification-wise. Only Hotcams actually labels it's cam as "stg 2".

There is no gold standard by which cams can be judged to identify them as stg1, stg2, stg3 or whatever. "Stage" labels are just made-up terms to help simplify identifing how radical something is. Hotcams labels it's cams in stages to make for an intuitive naming system. Conversly, a company like Web Cam uses labels like 450/451, 479, and 463/9i instead of stg 1, stg 2, and stg 3. The whole "stage" thing is just part of Hotcams user-friendly philosophy.

ETA: ignore most of this too

CRF's come 12:1 stock, just food for thought.
11:1 seems too mild to be, but whatever ya like.

Whoops! I just made a big mistake in this thread. I'm thinking 400EX and am only now realizing we're talking 05' 450R.

YES, go 12.5:1 (or more if you can run race gas)!! Stock is lowly 10.5:1.

Sorry for the goof-up.

well i would like to run a 12:5:1 but dont u have run race gas for that big of compression an i dont really want to run race gas b/c i ride lots of trails an race gas gets pretty pricey i believe?..maybe i can make this a little more clear im goin to be running a full dasa an was wondering some good companies to go with who makes the best power/torque on the bottom to mid range with a cam, piston an pipe combo ive heard lots of good things bout dasa an was wonderin about the internal parts or would any 12:5:1 compression piston be juss as good as the other?...thanks

The 450R is water cooled.. I know for sure you can go up to at least 12:1 compression with premium pump. Probably up to 12.5:1 without detonation, since the engine design is very efficent.

13.5:1 can be done, 12.5:1 is well within pump gas standards. Any 2 pistons with the same compression ratio's will give almost the same exact performance.

ok so i can run a 12:5:1 on pump gas an even a 13:5:1?..now wat about some good cams?

just read on the dasa web-site that with the 13:5:1 piston u havr to run a minimum of 100 octane race gas

12.5 is as high as you can go on pump gas
13.1 race fuel.

Stage 2 or a CRF cam would work nice.

Many options there also. Depends on your riding. Seems to me most people go with the hotcams stage 2 or the HRC cam. I personally went with the stage 2 but dont forget about the stage 1.

That 12.5:1 piston is 99mm, 5mm over the stock 04/05 94mm bore. To run that piston you'd need a new cylinder or have your current cylinder bored and re-plated.

For stock bores:
CP makes a 11:1, 12:1 and 13:1.
Wiseco makes a 11.5:1 and 13:1.
JE makes a 11.5:1 and 13:1.
KBR (http://www.trx450r.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=31211) sells a 12.25:1 semi-custom CP piston (it's called the Venom--designed by "Mixxer").

If I was restricted to pump gas I'd run the 12.25:1 Venom or a 12:1 CP, personally. 13:1 kind of puts you in no-mans land between running race and pump. I'd run race with 13:1 but if your going to run a 13:1 you might as well go to a 14:1 Venom. JMO.

Do all these things hold true when your talking about a 400ex??
