i want to paint the shield on the header of my 2005 400EX. do i just need a high temp spray paint or do i have to prep the shield for the paint somehow?

u can paint it dont kno how long it will last but u must prep it!
remove the old paint
sand it down
paint with high temp paint
clear coat it and u should be ok

Just another option out there i will proly be doin. I really like the look of polising the heat shield. A bit more upkeep but i think looks alot better or you could get it powder coated pretty cheap im sure. and it would hold up alot better. Check out this thread about half way down the page the polished shield.

i painted my heat shield and it never scratched or anything, i think the heat baked the paint on, i just made sure it was bare metal, and primed it, sprayed 2 coats of paint, and 2 coats of clear, all high temp paint, it was so tough that when i put the paint stripper on it to make it bare aluminum i had to do 4 coats of paint stripper

I painted my heat shield and it looks great. I primed it,painted and clearcoated it. Use a high temp paint like a 500-1200 degree.

i used some paint stripper in a spray can, it took the paint off my rims in one shot, but the heat shield was another story
