Will the bearing carrier from a 400ex work in a 250r swinger? If so I am assuming that the axle will work also. Are all honda carriers alike?

yeah a 400ex carrier will work, as long as the original carrier's O.D. is the same size as the new carrier. If they are different (twin row is smaller than tapered) then you'll need a different brake stay. Most honda carriers are 70mm O.D.

I ordered a 250r carrier off of ebay and it said "400ex/250r" on the box and my axle fit fine. I even did the 450r brake conversion and it works perfectly.

The 250X, 300EX & the 400EX carriers are narrower than the 250R carrier. They all will fit in the 250R swingarm, but you wont be able to mount the brakes up because the carrier is shorter.
You can use a 250R axle in the 250X 300EX & 400EX if you take a inner bearing race from a stock single row bearing & use it as a spacer on the brake side.
If you could mount the complete swingarm from the 400EX on the 250R it would work like that.

Wrong, 400EX carriers are exactly the same. I have switched back and forth between my 250R and 400EX with NO problem. The 250X and 300EX carriers ARE different and will not work.

Seriouslly, wonder what the deal is then.
I guess its been about a year or so ago, I replaced a 400EX rear carrier & I had a 250X 300EX used rebuilt one on hand & was going to use it but the owner wanted a double row new one, so didnt use it.
That carrier was the same as the 300EX.
On the 400EX, did the carriers change sometime during the years of production. I dont know myself if they did, but that one was the same.
Sorry jonboy, I guess I stand corrected, I'm wondering now.

All 400EX carriers are the same, unless they changed something on the '05 and newer, I haven't had one of those apart yet, but I doubt it since I don't believe there was a swingarm change. As you said the 250X and 300EX are different, so is the 450R, I believe they are all narrower than the 250R/400EX unit.

The axles are alike except the wheel hubs are splined different,so if you use an EX axle you will need EX wheel hubs.

Thanks for all the help. I believe you are right about the hubs the ex hubs are 24 spline and the R hubs are 25 spline. My next ? is can I put the ex carrier in( getting it free thats why I asked ) and still use the R axle, hubs and brake configuration then?

if you have the numbers or old bearing, you can pick them up at your local auto or bearing supply.
