I was told that these needed to be maintains. My friend says there is bearings inside and they wear out. Is this true, and if they do need to be maintained what do i do to keep it good.

There are needle bearings in there that should be replaced every so often, its better to replace them before the needles desintegrate and all that force makes the hole in the swingarm oval shaped, which happened to my friend. Also the bolt should be pulled out about every 3-6 months(depending on what type of riding you do) and lubed up with some good grease or anti seize so it doesnt get stuck in there.

So can I just take it out, grease the hell out of it, and throw it back in?

Thats what I do to mine atleast once a month. No problems yet. Maybe replace the bearings every year or 2.

yeah those will freeze up in no time.I have heard some waterproof marine grade grease works wonders but i have personally used wheelbearing grease which also works as long as you do it from time to time.;)
