I heard amsoil leaves gunk in your engine.. I notice that i had to keep adding oil every so often.. Im not saying its BAD oil.. they brand itself is good.. but for some reason.. it just breaks down a gunks ups.. just reg honda oil is good..

I use 10W40 Amsoil works like a top, running amsoil 10W40 since 2000, original motor, and not smoking , runs like a top, so that's proof Amsoil is a wicked oil.... P.S. I never baby my 2000 400ex...
So when on the topic of what oil to use that should make your decision alittle easier to make...use it all year around...

I ran the standard honda oil for the 1st 2 years then switched to spectro and my 02 runs like a top

Amsoil is a really good oil. I broke my engine in with GN4 and then ran synthetic after. The main reason that oil will "gunk" up is when you either mix oils or use different ones when you change it.

I've always ran Honda GN-4. I ran it for several years before I tore my engine down and rebuilt it this spring.

The inside of the engine and trans looked like brand new, no sludge, no buildup anywhere. It's good stuff.:macho

I personally like the ams oil 0w-40 so far it seems like my 400 runs the best on it....

someone told me not to run synthetic oils in my 400 ex... Is this true? If I can run synthetics I will be switching over to royal purple and giving that a shot.

Considering I have case upon case for the cars :)

its just fine to run synthetic in a quad, but there is plenty of stuff better than royal purple

better than Royal Purple? Being asmoil? or other brands?

I've run RP in my race motors for years now and I have never seen a more perfect wear patter on the bearings ever

Any idea what the ABSOLUTE best for the 400 would be?

I agree, I run Spectro too and love it. It doesn't look as dirty and broken down when I do an oil change as the Honda oil does.

You should only run honda aproved fluids in ur quad, honda makes some of the best motors an they tell ya to put the fluids they do in for a reason.only thing about gn4 is that it burns off slowly just like any other oil will do.

The synthetic they are telling you not to run is synthetics with moly in them. Moly is an ingredient that doesnt get along with the wet clutch, it will make it slip. Thats why you shouldnt run car synthetics in your quad, only motorcycle oils because they are designed for wet clutch engines.
