Papster,

I was talking with Colby here yesterday asking about a CRF450 piston. He said it could be molycoated for and extra $40 or so to keep some heat down. Would that process go thru you or does Colby do it thru someone else?

cost?

thanks

Colby uses a company that is a bit closer to him. They do really good work also! Shipping across the country only when you dont have access to a shop that does it down the street :D

I do recomend the process however. It does no harm, and has been proven to add some longevity to the piston and has been shown to add a wee bit of power.

On a 2 stroke I wouldnt worry so much about it if you plan on regular piston changes, but on a 4 stroke it seems to work well. Some of the larger companies even coat 3 different coatings on the piston, and the valves, springs etc.

Does molycoating do anything to the piston-to-cylinder clearances?

no, it is a thin film lubricant coating and will have no effect. once the piston is coated(if its done by hand not computer controlled applicator it can be rubbed down with oil and a scuff pad. The coloring is only for the applicator, it serves no purpose after curing, the metal protectant penetrates the material and does nt lay on the surface.
