Heres a pic of the polished throttle color. The resolution is terrible but it's all I have to work with. I did the same to the dry sump, tie rods and oil filter cover. In person it looks like chrome.

aircraft stripper from wal mart takes it right off

couldn't you just sand blast it lightly. Just curious does the chrome affect stay like that or does it dull out pretty fast? Cause I don't want to be polishing it every ride.

Don't sand blast. The key to polish is to get the metal as smooth as possible. Sandblasting will kill aluminum. The first time I took the paint off
I used a wire brush and still kill the finish. I used steal wool, and then I use the black wet/dry sandpaper and get the aluminum real smooth with that. The steel wool still isn't the best way to get the paint of. Its alot more work than othere ways. I heard the oven cleaner works but haven't try it yet.

i have a baldor 3/4horse buffer that does that mighty quick.

I just bought a buffing set from sears that goes on the end of a drill. Its a decent set-up for me.

so how do you actually get it shiney like that?

09-15-2002, 01:18 PM
does it stay shiney, because I had a cr250 and the alluminum frame would dull out pretty fast.

i just did my throttle cover tonight with a dremel and some polishing attachements. either strip the paint or sand it off, and keep polishing it with a high grade polishing compound at a decent rpm and itll look good. after that buff it out by hand and itll look like chrome.

Is that an aluminum throttle cover? Are you just polishing aftermarket aluminum parts? The stock steel ones would rust very quickly, right?

Thanks.

Can you post a pic of your polished oil tank? Is it aluminum?

I did all the paint stripping with 5f5. It takes a couple of apps with powercoat but once the paint was off I just polished it using a bench grinder and polishing wheel. At the same time I did the axle, tie rods, H-bar clamps. Cost me 20 bucks for everything.

Would just paint thinner work for this?? and use some polish??? or would it even be better to soak the whole thing in a bowl of paint thinner for a few minutes then start rubbing it off??

I don't think paint thinner will work but it's worth a try. Rather than stripping the paint you could remove it using steel wool or sand paper but it's gonna take a lot longer.
