I always use a clutch and have had no problems. People say they can shift faster but I can shift just as fast.

One of the guys i ride with says you can upsift without a clutch but you can not downshift without one. 6 months later he was putting a new tranny is his craptor:p

i think raptor is an old indian word for bad tranny. i hardly ever use the clutch to shift, up and down, 4 years and no problems.

Done correctly, clutchless shifting is not harmful.

How do you do it correctly?

To shift correctly without clutch just let the rev drop a little by droping gas then shift and pull gas on. if it dont work dont force it you just didnt les the rev drop enough !

its done easiest when there isnt a load on the engine. example: when you let off the throttle just enouhg to maintain your speed, a touch less and its real easy to shift. enough time spent doing this and you wont even think about it, easier and easier to do.

unless i'm really hammering on it, i dont use the clutch to upshift however, i do use the clutch to downshift. the technique to clutchless upshifting is to time the shifting with the "gas off" "gas on" method. i've done it for years en years.

^^ What he said.

I've been using this method for almost 9 years on my ex, also.

I NEVER clutch on holeshots...and try not to during a race to reduce arm fatigue. but YES when you downshift and are using compression to slow the quad

If i'm draging or just plan getting it, I don't let off the throttle, but I hit the clutch real fast on upsifts, but downshifts I use the gas on, gas off method. never had any problems. If you don't use the clutch to shift up then that means you have to let off the throttle to shift into a higher gear if you don't wanna do harm to your tranny.

As said before it's mainly to reduce arm pump on long XC style races. I don't know about you, but my 330 w/ heavy clutch springs will wear your arm out in a hurry. ;)

Save the arm from fatiguing so you can use the clutch effectivly when you really need it.

And yes my cable is properly lubricated. ;) I just have heavier than stock clutch springs due to a much higher power output.
