View Full Version : How to set suspention for more hook-up?

How can I set my shocks so that I get more hook-up from my rear tires. It seems that most of the weight of my quad sits on my front end and my rear tires spin like there is no tomarrow. When I ride my friends 400ex the front end pops up easily. It does seem that his doesn't turn as well, though.

Check your ride height. With your elkas you should have a prescribed ride height that they recommend.

This was a pre-existing problem before my elkas. It actually got a little better with the Elkas but is still really spin happy.

Ride height and front to back ballance. With the 400 you probably want the front to be 1/4" -1/2" higher.

Tire pressure? To much might make the tires stiff?

Rider position?

Otherwise I don't know???

The tires are good. 5 psi

It has to be something with the rear shock compression and pre-load. What settings would make it grab more.

The softer the rear shock, the more it will squat and grab, what kind of tires you currently running?

what rear shock are you running? That is the question.

Holeshot HDs (shouldn't spin too much)
Stock rear shock

decrease your rear preload and turn your compression out 1 full turn, then go from there

what helps me a lot is just moving your butt a few inches back on the seat.

If your Elka front shocks are SSD (no preload) then your ride height up front is probably too low in comparison to the stock rear shock. You'll either need to lower the ride height in the rear to match the front or get the rear shock converted to SSD. If your ride height is too low in front it will cause the quad to turn better but you will lose traction in the rear. Your ride height should be nearly the same at the front engine mount as it is just in front of the swingarm. You can even go about a 1/4" lower in the rear to help with traction.

Rebound adjustment also will make a difference.Slower rebound will give you less traction.Faster rebound will give you more traction to a point.
