So i bought this 87 TRX250X and while doing some maintenance checks, i found that the decompressor arm on the cylinder head is missing and the hole in the head has been plugged with an aluminum plug. looks like the plug has been pressed into the housing, not threaded. What is the benefit from removing the decompressor and is it going to cause any problems as far as engine operation? Thanks for any info.....

No its only used to help you find TDC so its easier to kick over, its only a 250cc so you shouldnt need it unless you go to a big bore high comp piston, even then though you may not need it.;)

it kicks over fine...starts up and runs good. I was just wondering if there was a reason for somebody removing it, or if there was some advantage to removing it, but the more i dig into it, I think its just the result of somebody not taking very good care of it. Thanks for the replys.

Sometimes people remove the decompression to insure that the valves never stick.

Sometimes people remove the decompression to insure that the valves never stick. My 406X big bore stroker had it removed... along with reverse...:ermm:

usually its for the vavles not to stick and just one less thing to go wrong.
