What do reeds do?

I recently took the top end off of a lt250r and saw the reeds, I always knew that two strokes had reeds, but what do they do?

reeds act as a valve when the exaust exits so that it doesn't blow trough the carb. you know then thier bad when it only runs on choke or it only idles, also you will know that it will blow fuel out the carb.
