How Many Gears?? 5 or 6

Hey guys how many gears does your 250r have? Mine says 6 on the stator cover, but i swear i only have 5. then again i think my engine was pieced together...

all 86-89 where 6speed as well as the 85-86 atc 250r

Here's a really dumb question for you!!

How are you checking the gears? Five upshifts equate to a six speed gearbox. From neutral you go one down and five up.

Who knows how that could be. Could be a bent shift drum, or there could be something wrong with a gear. The only way to check, and know for sure is to tear it apart.

Is splitting the case and disassebling/reassembling the bottom end a really hard job? and does the crank come completely out?

From the lowest position of the shifter, did you count 4 upshifts or 5 upshifts?

Are you doing this just sitting on the quad or are you riding it.

sitting, shift, then roll till it clicks then shift again, then roll

Do you have a big gap ( movement ) in the shifter between any of the gears or does it jump into everyone except the last gear, 6th.
Could be on 6th gear, one of the dogs is broken off & jamed between the gear & wont let it shift into 6th.

What do you mean my a big gap? can i check if theres something wrong/ broken with the gears without splitting the cases? also i have yukon gears if that makes a difference??

If your seating on it and rolling it to make sure it hits that gear then something isn't right if you click down 1 and only go 4 up. I'm pretty sure you will have to split the case to fix the problem. Hope ya get it fixed.

Splitting engine cases aren't for the novice. Unless you have a manual and take your time you could prolly do it.
