hello again ppl,

I'm pleased, for the third time, to post another exclusive engine build up thread here at ATVRIDERS.com. Harlen, owner of ATVRIDERS.com, has permitted me, yet again, to detail the inside working of another full out 450R build. Many builds are different, and even though we just had a sucessful TT thread (thanks xsr_racing28c aka Jay), this one will be different yet.

Here's the details of this build (I may be editing over time):

1. stock bore stock stroke
2. new DRG high compression custom piston with new head and cylinder machining approaching ultra compression.
3. DRG SSAR porting (possibly DSAR) on new head
4. Falicon Supercrank blueprinted and balanced to my new piston pack (w/ updated HONDA 04/05 crank retro kit).
5. new state of the art completely overhauled transmission worked performed by the world-known expert in manufacturing transmissions for ATV capable of withstanding power over 150hp,.. new bearings, new shift forks, with gears hardened, backcut for easy TT shifting, and possibly a 'ridable' over-ride setup
6. Web 943/921 nasty little bugger. timing similiar to the 208 with small valve lift. low lift big duration permits squeezing down compression around profile for max power output.
7. KW spring kit, even though the stock springs would easily control valves on this 'drop-in' cam profile. A TT build requires high revs for extended periods; so, KW were selected.
8. >43mm FCR, could be a DRG or DASA depending on availability of parts.
9. Dynatek programmable with programmed DRG curves.
10. Stock sized Ferrea SS intake valves, stock ex valves (maybe +1mm depending << I'll indicate further later)
11. exhaust to be tested against RE second generation/DASA

By the way: the end results is we expect to be finished around the new year due to we have to wait for my custom piston, then the crank to be balanced against its weight, the tranny overhaul to be outsourced, detailed port work, ect., ect....

Everyone's participation, questioning is encouraged...

Doesnt really matter when you have money.

I cant wait to see this build complete. CZ what kinda suspension set up are you going with.

details of my piston is forthcoming (few days).. as soon as the pistons are received, pictures and detailed info will be posted... in the meantime, I will say this about the piston... the goal of mine was to design a high compression piston above 'shelf' pistons designed to only be used with RACE fuel (110 or higher)... tight squish, tall compression height, coatings, Pro wrist pin with forced wrist pin oiling, gas porting, anti-detonation grooves, accululator ring flutter groove, side skirt coatings, laser etching, plus additional features not seen in the ATV industry.. Basically, an all out high performance custom race piston... Pistons have been processed...

the tranny work will also be first too.... the rep the tranny builder has is stellar. the tranny shall click like butter, barely have to pull the foot to feel the click into gear under power too!

Chad anyway to get ahold of one of these? How much? PM Me some details! I'm in the market for a new piston.

What kind of prices are we talking on the piston? Sounds killer.

chad502ex
11-24-2006, 02:32 PM
as soon as the order is complete with designing and processing in a few days, then I'll know what the costs are going to be...

This piston is race only with race gas fuel requirements of 110+ or more. Although it is designed for stock bore, it is not considered 'drop-in'...

i forgot to mention that the valve reliefs are deepened too for large lift camshafts, and the ring grooved are micro-machined; plus a couple of other piston surprised ;)

I'm real excited about this design,... just waiting for the processing to complete...

Here we go again Alex.. I think Im gonna have to talk to your Pops pretty soon... Since he's such a nice guy, ask him when I send my head to Chad, if I can just add it onto his bill.. I dont think Chad would mind since he's pretty much part of your family now! Good luck guys!!

Kila: this motor won't be TT 100% becuase it could end up being used for either MX or TT since of the way me and chad planed it out.

I'm pretty sure Tim Farr in his TT set up has his motor moved back or forward a few inches to create a better weight distribution. I dont know if any companys on the market currently make a TT frame....

xsr_racing28c
11-28-2006, 06:08 PM
I'm not sure if he has it moved forward or back, but i'm pretty sure i've heard something about them lowering the motor a small amount to give it a lower position.

This is not really necessary when running TT unless your running up front with the pro's and need that little edge over the competition.

The pros in TT do everything possible to shave weight and will try new things like motor positions to see if it helps. But running a production bike like CZrider263 is would be more than fine just normally setup with the stock frame and stock motor location.

well, for this build, i have spoken to the best tranny cutter in the country.... For about $400, he can get me a backcut 3 speed over-ride transmission in about a weeks turn-around time.... not to shabby from the best there is in ATV transmission tech..

allow me to detail:
a 3 speed backcut over-ride transmission is the first three gears (1st/2nd/3rd) backcut for larger hp loads and allows the rider to speed shift through the first three gears while WOT. Fourth and Fifth gear can be clutch, but if you let of the throttle in the over-ride gears while under power- POP goes your tranny.. the over-ride tranny is meant for the TT rider or Dragger to get thru these gears as fast as possible with near near power loss shifting with clutch.... shaaaweat!

Anyway, after talking to czrider263, he felt like this would not be a good option for him for his TT/MX 450r.

still waiting to get started here on this build. I have the engine, just awaiting money and parts to get started.... :D

Because im not 100% sure this will be TT and you don't want a tranny that will be unhappy if you let of the power at all through 1-3 gear. so maybe i will look into a overdrive or rekuse clutch IDK. Me and chad talk alittle at his house about it.

big difference in overdrive and lockout... i think you mean clutch lockout not the tranny overdrive....

sorry for making those images soo big, but let me explain what this product does...

This product bolts to the outer clutch pressure plate, and as the stock clutch rotates the centrifugal force swings out the lockout clutch arms which applies additional inward force on the pressure plate.. the faster the rpm the more the lockout applies inward pressure to squeeze the clutch assembly together...

can't finish the build until Web cam ships the cam to us...

Once the cam is here, it'll be just a 30 minute drop-in and it'll be all finished including the Dynatek re-programmed, and the DRG 43mm taper bore carb all assembled too!!!

I don't want to jump in with another topic but I thought I would share some information.

Well for this monster motor I bought a DASA intake system for it instead of the K and N set up I was running. I also had a K and N set up from a 06 around so I took some pictures to show the difference.

First here is the 05 K and N set up.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b292/czrider263/Intakes/IMG_0013.jpg

06 K and N set up.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b292/czrider263/Intakes/IMG_0014.jpg

DASA 04-05 Intake.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b292/czrider263/Intakes/IMG_0015.jpg

All three together.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b292/czrider263/Intakes/IMG_0018.jpg

The main difference to me was the rings themselfs. Both of the K and N setups had a ring with a very small roll on the intake side. I would think the more the better to a point. Here is a picture to show what I mean.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b292/czrider263/Intakes/IMG_0022.jpg

Backside going into the intake tube.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b292/czrider263/Intakes/IMG_0021.jpg

A nice picture of the DASA ring.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b292/czrider263/Intakes/IMG_0019.jpg

Whats nice about the DASA is it uses a 06 size filter on a 04-05 bike. The DASA intake makes up for the size difference with that huge roll. The 05 ring is so small it fits into the 06 ring. That shows you how much of a size difference it makes up.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b292/czrider263/Intakes/IMG_0024.jpg

chad502ex
03-18-2007, 11:03 AM
Great info Alex...

Those DASA intake rings, commonly called Pagrams, are like intake velocity stacks used to couple the larger filter to the intake tube/box, while increasing the velocity of the intake air into the cylinder head...

remember,...

cfm = QV

where V is the velocity in ft/min.
and Q is the cross sectional area..

anyway, with my new flow bench and software, I'll be providing a lot of air flow data in the upcoming days...

This build should be silly low to mid build... extremely fast arm yanking power with ~16:1 static compression, mid cam, velocity intake, DRG ignition to compliment mid range, with plenty of velocity increase with the DRG 43mm taper bore FCR carb...

I'll post a picture tonight...

Its true! i thought since the piston adds a nice mid range burst i should add a cam to match. I mean its nice to say you rev the piss out of your motor when you race but really i end up riding in the mid range of the bike. Should yank my arms off out of turns:devil: .

Well i got to do more riding today and well HOLY S**T. This thing is just amazing. I thought my 53hp 06 was fast. This thing would smoke it. It rev's so fast and has SO much bottom end it is almost uncontrolable. And the sweet thing is that the power doesn't fall ontop. It just keeps pulling. I gunned it at the bottom of the driveway and it did a wheelie from 1-4 th gear.

CHAD YOU DID A AMAZING JOB:macho :macho :macho

I hope to dyno it. The bike is alot stronger than the 06 with 53+hp. It really flat out pulls.

this is so awesome to hear.... I'm glad you like it....

now, let me see...... what can i do next...... oh yea,.....

well, first thing is plug in my new flowbench,

,.. release my piston to others.....

then,.....

release a cam? HEHE, yup (modeled at 60hp on stock bore, stock stroke, stock valves)

...lets just say i've been tweaking a cam profile on my software that should pull 3 more from peak torque to peak hp without any loss below peak torque and more gain at peak to rev limit over well take a guess...

The quad looks great Alex. Mine is 95% done, i just gotta tighten some nuts, fill the fluids, wire in some new kill switches and a new tether, and put on the front plastics and I'm done. I'm hoping to get the rest of it finished up on weds nite.

I wish i could have had this thing together already, but I'm in the midst of starting up my own busniess and I'm busy as can be lately.

I'll have a finished product by the weekend Chad, I know your anxious!!!!

One holeshot I'll never forget.... Glad your shoulder was doctored to be only bruised and not broken... good.

Your setup is sick no doubt. I've riden many 55hp builds and that 05 you have tromps them all. It lays it down- no doubt! One build I'm doing for myself... Thanks for letting me ride.

Heal up and get out there again....

The front end was way up due to the large amounts of hp. When i let off for the turn the front end droped into soft stuff and cought and just flipped me off. I Tried to flip it over and continue but my shoulder made me just go slow around the track.

Sorry to hear about the bad luck Alex. Atleast you grabbed a holeshot. This sounds almost exactly what happened to me at Dutchmen last year when I pulled my first holeshot for drg then crashed shortly after haha.. Maybe you should have came up to my house this weekend. Would have saved you a bruized shoulder. I got my quad torn apart. Motor is out basically everything is off and out of my old frame. Still waiting to send out my shocks and get some new stuff ordered. I'm also debating on wheather of not i should freshen up my top end since she does have a decent amount of hours already on her. Just so much sh1t to do and so little time! Chad I'll be giving you a call probably tomarrow or tuesday.

have fun swapping parts. i think im going to sleepy next weekend to cheer on one of my buddy's. As for your motor you might want to change cams and maybe get your vavle seats cleaned up. me and chad love the web 493. If you get a web get it welded or it might spin on you like my 208 or 943 did. I will pop out the cam in the 05 to get welded soon. All i messed up on my quad so far is the rear plastics and rear number plate.

BTW chad thanks for such a strong motor i was thinking about it today how your motor pulled a 290lbs in gear kid in front. Thats when you know you got hp. You do wonderful work.

Alex or Chad, If you dont mind, could you possibly PM me your FCR carb settings and jet sizes you use.. See if Im in the right ballpark.. Motor just has a real weird power.. Its like flat power for a sec or two right off the bottom when you stab the gas, but then the power hits exactly like a 2-stroke would!! I know Chad you said it could be the FCI, but I also wanna make sure the carb is correct. Gonna try the stock intake too.. Look for any differences..

Thanks guys!

oh no, its not the carb doing that.. i'd bet you go back to the stock boot and find that the problem disappears.. There appears to be a fix to smooth out the response of the FCI, its rounding over the needle tip into a bullet resemblance instead of it being sharp..

good luck tommorow. you still racing if the weather is crappy?

Ok well I don’t know if people on this site know that there is a small problem with some web cams. What they do is press on a flange onto the cam core at something like 2,000lbs. What has happened to others and myself is that they sometimes spin. I have had two now spin on me. A web 208 and web 943 are the ones that spun on my builds. To help this problem the solution so far is to get the cam welded. To keep the web 493 in my 05 from spinning that is what I did today. Also since my 06 was apart I switched cam towers. As some know the one in the 06 was bored for larger cam profiles. With the 05 cam at .415 lift it needed it a lot more than the 06. So here are some pictures of the welded cam and the cam swap.

Yeah.. Motor came with Baldwin/CRF Ign/wire harness.. Baldwin 14:1, Baldwin FCR.. Baldwin ported head.. Baldwin MX cam.. Full Hinson clutch.

That CRF Ign is nasty!! Helps it rev so much faster then I was used to before!

absolutely, there has been extensive dyno testing and all have proven that removing weight removes the interia needed for higher end horsepower. It may feel zippier with a lighter flywheel but I'll take the dynos word and save $800 for the conversion kit.

Oh, don't take this wrong TMS, there are many whom like the ignition modification- it's kewl.

Well I got alittle news on my part..... My shocks should be back probably sometime tomarrow. I decided to try a dual rate Ti-Spring set up for my fronts along with a 25lb stiffer rear shock spring. I sent my fcr carburator to cernics because something was broken in my hotstart assembly. Expecting to have all the parts in sometime thursday or friday. Alex are you going to come up and give me a hand once i get all these parts in? I can't wait to get back on the motocross track.
