Ive got a Hotcams stage 2 on my christmas list. Do you have to use hotcams shims or can honda ones work?

i would think it would work it should everythign else would still be honda like the vavles. it would be alot cheeper too compared to ordering a whole shim kit you would never use but how would you know what shims to get?

i remember chad saying something about how the stock shims are harder and wont flatten out as easily. The hotcams shims are softer. i dont know how much or if it really matters.. thats just what i remember chad saying.
Thanks

yes, both honda and hotcams shims will work. the honda ones are a little different but they are much more expensive as well. i have used both and i have not had a problem with either one.

This is true... Hotcam shims are softer shims than HONDA shims.. this is fact. However, you will not really noticed the softness unless you are using DLC coated valves or have huge cam... I doubt the Hot Cam will show any weakness in the Hot Cam shim at all. You are safe to use what you want.

Most dealerships offer an exchange. If you take back your shim for different size exchange it will cost you nothing but trip to dealership... or you can install new cam and determine what shim size to order from service honda... but only if you are installing the cam yourself.

hope this helps.,

about $80 for HC shim kit when you can get a few shims for free or order for $3 a piece..

both will work the honda shims are a little more precise. Changing them is a piece of cake once you get it down. It takes me far longer to take the tank off then it does to check and change shims. I would definitely get a service manual or check out the engine FAQ on www.trx450r.org and give it a try.

Curious are the clearances the same for the hotcam as stock?
