Hi guys, Im pretty new here. I ride a 03 400ex with a few modds. But im looking into switching to a 450r. I ride mostly trails but im looking for more power all around. My 400 has alot of low end but it has a 41mm fcr carb. I was told it would run amazing on a stock motor with no pipe, they were wrong. So now that the winter is coming everyone is starting to let their rides go and I was considering a 450r because im going up to silver lake MI next summer and I dont think my 400 can handle it. Any sugestions would be great, or alternate routes to get my 400 running like a 450 and not break the bank. Thanks, Ryan

When i made a move from my 400ex to my 2006 450r i couldn't believe the difference. You deffinatly wont regret it. Just keep up with the maintenance on the 450 and it should run good!!! :D

Am I going to be able to claw and crawl over stuff like I can with my 400? I live in MA and our trails are anything but smooth. Its mud up to the seat or rocks the size of cars.

the 450 likes to rev high and will require a lot more finese of the throttle and clutch...the bike like to go fast and not ease over objects...i have found that larger downed logs that i could just crawl over with the ex are harder to get over without stalling...

i feel like when I am riding my R that I am riding a 87R....lol. It rides like a 2 stroke alot. Likes reving high. It requires alot of clutch work in the tight stuff, but once you figure it out, its pretty easy to ride.

So would putting a 416 or 427 kit in my ex be a better idea then?

If you can afford an R get it! You will adapt to how to ride it.

If you get a 450r 1 suggestion i can make is put a good pipe on it.And drop 1 tooth on your front sprocket. You'll be to crawl better than you could on your 400ex.You wont be sorry.
