Hi, I'm talking to a guy about buying one of these, does anyone have one/had one or know of any problems accociated with these trucks? It's 4 wheel drive and has a 5 liter engine. Also, the 1989 Chevy 1500 4x4 with a 350, same question with this truck. Also, how was the power of the Ford 5.0? Thanks alot!

I don't know much about the Ford, but that model Chevy's transmission were junk. Everyone I know that had one, either had to rebuild or buy a transmission.

the for 5L's are gutless and if its an auto ity makes 'em even worse, don't expect good gas milage either. the ford twin I beam front end is horrible for wearign front tires, either worn on the inside or out side it hard find one that actually has good camber.
they werant known for good 4x4, the lock out hubs are pain and T-cases are junk.
after all i've seen and worked on ford's i will NEVER buy one nor drive one.

the 350's in the chevys last for ever and about them having bad tranny's it all depends on how its been treated, pluse you can find them for a dime a dozen, i'd go for the chevy they are alot better truck than a ford. parts are cheaper, easyer to work on and al least the 4x4 will work.

its totally up to you and which one is in better shape, mileage etc. but you cant kill a chevy;) the TBI isn't the greatest but it is easy to work on and troubble free.

look here for how many of 'em are still running

totally up to you but go for the GM!

Alright thanks. I am definatly leaning towards the chevy right now. And does anyone know how hard it is to replace the cab mounts? the chevy doesn't have them. Thanks

If you've got basic tools, a jack, and a block of wood you can do the mounts pretty easy. If you don't have a jack, some buddies will work nicely to lift the cab while you slide the mounts in. ;)

We've got an 88 F-250 5.0 at work with 60,000 original miles and we can't inspect it anymore because it's so rusted out and nothing will work on it. It really can't get out of it's own way either. It might be one of the slowest pick-ups i've ever been in. But, now its the plow truck, when/if it starts. Whether it was a lemon or not I don't know, but that truck was and is terrible in every way. We've had multiple Chevy's and haven't had many problems. The 350's are pretty bulletproof but not crazy fast. The tranny's on the older ones are a bit weak though so watch out for abuse when you look at it. Good luck with that you get.

Never heard of the 700R4 being junk. It's actually a transmission recommended with being used with mildly modded 350's. If you plan on doing some higher HP you usually want at least the TH350 or 4L60E/4L80E.

Defiantely go with the Chevy, Ford definately had more problems with their earlier models and those Chevy's were more bulletproof then they are now.
