I used the honda brand in mine. I believe it was 80/85 somehting like that. I had no problems with it. Its actually about the same as 10/40.

yes, if you use a high quality gear oil in the 75 to 90- whatever range it is equivaloent to 10W40 but it will have additive package for the limited slip rear ends whose lubrication requirement is pretty similiar to our clutch's needs.

If you think about it, the limit slip or "posi" rearend has a pretty similiar equipment function as our trannies, you have multiple gear sets meshing together and the "posi" uses clutch packs to spin both axles together.

That's the only oil I would ever use in a 250R. Bell Ray Gear Saver 80w is the only oil we've used in our 88 250R. Dennis

If I'm not mistaken the book actually calls for Motorcyle 10w40 oil

Dry, it will take about a quart. And yes, fill it until it comes out of the filler bolt hole.

exactly like kirt13 said, but dont forget to warm the engine up before you drain the oil...

First off, lets get something straight, do not refer to the book when it comes to lubrication recommendations because they "recommend" using 20:1 ratio in the gas! Good luck with whoever runs that, Honda seems to put a very conservative number out there in the book just to save thier *** on warranties! Run the 85W gear oil made specifically for the CR and TRX250R gear box. I have ran several different oils in my 250R's and after rebuilding a couple of them (doing basic maintanence) the lower end on the 85W red bottle gear oil made by Honda has left the best impression with all my gears still looking like BRAND NEW even after several hard seasons of riding!!!
