the 06 came with a 13 toothe stock and the 05 a 14 stock. if your looking for more bottom go down to the 13.

I added a 13T and liked it alot in the sand. Pulled very hard off on the bottom! It really isn't necessary for anywhere else, but in the sand I recommend it.

changing the front sprocket to a 13 tooth is one of the first mods many ppl choose to do (w/ 04 and 05s). most feel those years of the 450r were geared a bit too high fpr their liking.

I have an 05 and put a 13 on it, lost to much top. So i put the 14 back on and put a 39 on the back best thing i did.

when you put the 39 on the rear what advantage did it make?

One tooth on the front sprocket is equivalent to 3 on the rear sprocket.

so the 39 tooth gives you just a little more low end power? and will a 39 tooth be good for the sand dunes?

A 39 is a better all around choice, but I think you would be fine in the dunes with a 13T front.
The rear is quite a bit harder to change.
