I am looking for my son's 1st ATV.
Any advice or info. on what we should look at getting would be helpful. I don't want to spend more than $600.

Thanks- Trudi

My son started on a Suzuki LT50 at that age. You could probably find a used one for that price range. Watch out for the off brand ones that are really cheap. They seem to have a lot of problems and finding parts is always an issue.

I guess it would depend on what you plan on doing. If your going to ride the trails or in the yard go with like a Kawasaki, Suzaki.... if your going to race I would go with like a E-Ton, Kasea, DRR..... something with a jog motor and a frame you can buy race parts for. Like mxdad said get something you can get parts for. Kyle started racing when he was six but I wish I would have started him when he was four. Just do it now the time gos so fast it seems like yesterday he was six and sitting down in the woops at Westmoreland Fairgrounds and now he's ten doing the up hill double at High Point. And there's nothing cooler than working on the race quad together and then taken it to track. He races a E-Ton 70 and has a KFX80 for the trails.

Like was said above ou need to figure out if he's gonna race or just trail ride :) We started my son out on a LEM 50, it was a good beginner bike but he quickly outgrew it & we couldn't get mods for it so we ended up selling it, he did start his racing on it though!!
He now has a Kasea that is GREAT for the trails or racing when we first got it we took him trail riding & that little thing went thru everything we gave it!!!
So I would say figure out what you are going to want the quad used for first then go from there, you may be able to find a decent trail quad for $600 out there but figure out your options :)

And...................... GOOD LUCK

IMO the lem is a great starter quad(it is almost 100lbs lighter than the others). There are also many performance upgrades available for them, robbs racing has all the parts for them. good luck Mike
