400ex side panels

has anyone tried to put 05 400ex gas tank side panels on any of the older model 400ex's.I am going to try because the 05 side panels do not have thos hole things in them,the 05 ones look flush.

why dont you just buy the smooth side panels that are made for the 01 model.
