I'm no expert, but there seem to be some sharp people on this forum board, so hear goes. I friend of mine tells me he has heard from an "expert" engine builder that you can only get a maximum of 43HP out of a 400EX. To get that you have to spend about a grand. Piston, stroked, cam port etc. Does this sound right?

well it depends on how deep your pockets are you can hook NOS and put a turbo on it bore/stroke to a 463 3 angle valve job port and polish up the compression and i expect you can get alot of power out of it for a short amount of time until it blows a headgasket or the whole motor goes it just depends on how realible you want it to be as to how much power you can get out of it. im sure you can get more than 43 hp out of it though

I figure mine is making about 38hp as it sits. Hoping for low 40's once I install a new carb.

Max power ou of a EX.

500cc kit = 48-52hp depending on the cam you pic. $800

Nos adds around 20hp $600

Trubo adds 20-30hp $4000

Do that and you have a 400ex with around a 100hp.

technically if you're going to run a turbo you cant up the compression to much or youll blow the bottom end out of it anything over 10.1 maybe 11/5.1 for a turbo would be too much a turbo increases the compression ratio by forcing more air into the cylinder than what should be there thus creating more copmression and more power.

no, if you will read my post and other peoples you can run it for a short amount of time but it will blow, but yea your correct if you want a RELIABLE turbo set-up

id like to think more around 8.5:1 - 9.0:1 most cars dont run over 9.5:1. definately a custom cam and piston.

I was thinking those figures were low. The engine builder wasn't talking about turbo, NOS, exotic stuff, just kinda standard mods, cam, port, etc. I stll love my 416, and I usually hang with the 450s in the woods. They stretch me on the straights, but thats okay, it just makes me run that much harder.
