im a powder coating genieus

well i powder coated a plate white then before i put it in the oven i hit it with the torch on full asataline however you spell it and left black carbon marks all over it so it has like a cloud of black all around and boy ohh boy does it look slick. i wish i could get a picture.

not sure how contaminating the powder with acetylene will work out, but i have seen titanium heated in spots and then pc'd and it leaves a wild pattern. i tried searching for the pics but did not have any luck.

no no no i did it already and it worked fine i had my powder a little heavy in some spots and it craked on my but it looks slick all and all

I was watching either Overhualing or american hotrod, i think on of them, and they did the same thing with torch on some plastic, the put some other stuff then a clean coat, in the end it turned out to like a lot like wood grain..

if you do that in little flame like licks under a candy coat it looks pretty sweet, i've seen it on some motorcycle and car flame jobs before.

anyways i did notice it looked like a woodgrain my step mom wants me to make a picture frame with the colors. im going to try red one of these days and see how it turns out.

somebody used that on overhaulin (i think it was overhaulin) before they painted it. they torched the car in spots then painted red... damn did it looked good.

I think it would look better if it was a little more even. Try to keep the torch moving, that way you dont end up with big all black spots like on your first one.

Well I definitely think you're onto something. I think it'd look great if you started out with a color first instead of white. How will that hold up? I mean, the parts that you burnt, will they flake off? I was wondering if you'd have to bake a clear over that?

Here a acetelyne torch with a fine tip was used to create spots. Then the metal was coated with a matte finish and a special clear that allowed the discolored areas to show through.

Redracing88, not to get you fired up, but i will say your smoke on the plate looks ok, but you have to work on the curing, the finish on that part is not smooth, its filled with craters, etc. I wont even say orange peel effect, because its way beyond that. keep working on it though
