I bought a early 90's kx250 a/s carb today, do I need to change the needle to make it work? I know I'll have to rejet, but I didn't know about the needle. Also is there anything else I need to watch out for when installing this carb? Thanks for your help guys

I have the stock carb, with stock needle, on it right now. I don't have the carb yet to see what needle is in it, I was wanting to know before it got here so if I have to order a new needle I would have time to get it.

Try a kawasaki dirtbike forum, I'm sure they'll be more knowledgable about early 90's kx250 carbs than us.

post a pic of the carb when you get....

There will be numbers on the needle when you get it... look for a conversion chart....

CGJ is the needle you want... a little in either direction from CGJ is OK... but don't stray too far...

looking at the schematic of the carb. it appears to be no different than the aftermarket 38 a/s carbs that are sold for 250r's ect ect. the throat length appears the same ect ect. so i see no reason why it wont work. i would start out with the same jets that you are running in the stock carb as a base line. what needle is in the 38 a/s that you bought? what slide # is in the new carb?

Finally got the carb in its a PWKG279 AKFS with a #7 slide, and 45 slow jet, and 165 main....I haven't taken out the needle yet to look at it yet..also the cable was routed thru the cap with a brass looking elbow that screwed into the cap, does that come off for the new cable or does the cable route back thru it? The new cable doesn't have threads on it to screw into...Sorry for the long post

pilot is too small go up to a 50-52 start around 175-178 ish main, and IMHO CEL needle.... air screw 2- 2 1/2 out

I would say your going to need a special cable made to have that work right, or youll have to buy a different cap and slide so it will work with a 250r throttle cable.

it appears the kx style cap is a thread in, which is smart, the cable cant get stuck. the 250r cables dont thread in they slide into place and the spring keeps the cable from sticking open and popping out of the carb cap (sticking) IT HAPPENS THOUGH never really an issue but it can happen.

You could try to use a 250r keihn pwk throttle cable but you may need to do out of ordinary throttle cable adjustments to make it work with what youve got now..

either way get a 250r keihn pwk throttle cable and work from there, see if it will work on the carb the way it is, It might..

the keihn pwk have a drop in and lock type which connects to the slide. so it wiill probably work.

good luck

You should be able to unscrew that brass elbow and then screw in the standard cap nipple/rubber boot combo. I don't have a pic, but its a real small part with a lock nut. Look at a Sudco carb parts web site to get an idea of what you need.

O.K. had to order new cap, the one on it won't work...got the new cap from "carb parts" I finally took the needle out and the number on it says"N3WF" so is there a chart I can look at the see which way to go, and lastly if this one won't work will the needle out of the stock carb work for the weekend? Let me know...Thanks
