I'm looking for some ways to personalize my 450...has anyone tried handgaurds? Do they actually help or are they always in the way?

I think they help a lot. In the woods they protect your hands from sticks, and thorns are a damn good reason to get handguards. And if you ride mx they keep from dirt chunks from hitting your hands.

exactly...they just make the whole riding experience more enjoyable, i know i hate it when my hands get covered in mud and are all wet. my powermadds work pretty good at block most of the stuff, they are a tad pricey though...

there are two different styles of hand guards. wrap arounds and ones that dont wrap around.

if your just doing casual riding you don't need full wrap arounds. they are designed to protect your hands from trees/branches coming in the sie of your bars and getting on your fingers. cycra hand guards have an aluminum wrap around that can actually take a pretty good hit on a tree and protect your fingers too. powermadds have a wrap around also but it isn't quite as stout.

the normal style don't limit your hand movement as much. they you can slide your hands in and out of the sides of the bar if you want. they are lighter and alot cheaper too. they hold up find for small twigs and branches and mud but they don't hold up to larger stuff or trees.

I like the wrap around kind. I run the CYCRA brand. They realy take a beating. I have the ACERBIS type with out the alum wrap around on my kids atv and they are are very flimsy, but like Gbcap said for regular riding they will help your hands. If you race I would recomend the wraparound type.

I also run the MSR mud guards over mine to keep more mudd off the grips.
