The gas caps differ from 86/87 to 88/89. I found some billet gas caps off a 450R will work on my old 89 tank but not the 86. I probably have a stock 86/87 style around my garage, if I find it do you want it? All you have to pay for is a couple bucks in shipping.

If you have an 86/87 tank then I think you'll just have to bite the bullet and spend the $45 for a new one. It kinda sucks though because I found a bunch of billet caps for the 450R and 400ex for cheaper which would fit the 88/89 tank!:(

yes... doesnt it prettymuch just say that I will have to bite the bullet and buy a new tank? That's what i'm assuming. switch to the 88/89 tank or did he mean get a new gascap? That still doesnt explain why they don't make em for the 86'. Well that I can see.

Alright, here goes.....basically he's saying that you can't interchange a cheaper billet cap from another model that will fit the 86-87 250r. You have to buy a billet cap made specifically for it which costs more. Understand?

86-87 tanks have a screw-on rub strip the follows to contour of the top of the fender. They also have one or two (depending on year) screw-on rubber grommets on each side. The 88-89 tanks have neither of these. It's been awhile since I've looked in a stock tank but I believe the 88-89 have a clear plastic sleeve inside the filler hole which reduces the ID of the hole. I was always under the impression the the threads on all the tanks were the same, but I could be wrong on this. You may want to check a few different CR caps, one of them might be the same.

Exactly Rich250RRacer, a clear difference by looking at them is the strip that screws in on the side of the 86/87 while the 88/89 do not. I was so frustrated one day trying to fit my 86 cap on my dune tank (Clarke 4 gal.) because it did not come with one then I tried my gas cap from my 89 tank and it screwed right on, with no problems. I had to learn the hard way that they were different.

Thanks Aceman for clarifying what I was saying, yes, you will have to buy a specific billet cap for the 86 250R gas tank and am almost positive there is not a cheaper solution to use. I have found them for around $45. I think off the top of my head that Rocky Mountain ATV sells them fairly cheap. My .02! Tom
