alright well here is my dilema. im in my first year of college right now. my major is undecided so i need your suggestions on what i might need to do, and if you have any websites telling about majors and how long you have to go to school for a certain major would be very helpful.

well i didnt really put forth all the effort that i should have. i had alot more on my mind like four wheelers,baseball,trucks and girls. but im ready to buckle down now. going to school 5 or 6 years doesnt bother me either. medical stuff i think would be something that intersts me.

Ive been going to college for 3 years and Im still just a "general studies" major...though by next semester I have to have something figured out

Talk to the school counslors and take an aptitude test. It will point you in a few directions based on your likes, dislikes, and ability.

I dont have much advice for ya... but heres a few majors that might be of interest to you..

Mechanical Engineering - design quads or something like that
Construction Management - play with big trucks in the dirt or just tell everyone else what to do
Law - change laws regaurding atv's and such

I'm 33 years old and in my 15th year of college and I STILL DONT KNOW WHAT I WANT TO BE!!!! I'm thinking doctor because I've been in the ER so many times they think I work there anyway.

I envy you! I was just talking to one of my friends today and I told him I want to be a professional college student... I love being a college student and I never want to leave, I'm pretty sad that in a year I am going to be done.. And then I have to go out in the real world and get a real job... Although I have been considering grad school.... lol

those are good recommendations.

I am currently in my 4th year of Mechanical engineering school and unless you have a very strong math and physics skills it may just about kill you... being an engineer is a whole different personality for the most part. Designing quad parts for a living is a pipe dream few will ever achieve, JMO

Yea you have to love math to be in mechanical engineering.. my boyfriend did 2 years of it.. and literally every class he took was math.. although he switched to construction management, and that is basically the same way.. Just some classes he gets to play with dirt now lol

It may be a "pipe dream" for some.. But someone's gotta do it.. and if you work hard enough and good to a good enough school, it may some day be your reality.. But hey even if it doesn't become your reality, at least you have a degree that is worth something...

mechanical engineering is ALOT of math and you probably wont be designing quads or cars or anything spectacular anytime soon if you didnt try in high school....or youll probably be spending serious $$$$ to transfer to a school that offers a good program for that. im not trying to shy you away from it. using CAD is awesome...but dont expect to just have fun designing quad parts and cars... youll probably end up drawing dishwasher parts or something because alot of stuff needs to be designed and is important. its just not what you would think. i think our college requires you go take up to calculus 3 or something...its not much for the math whizzes...but for kids that hate math its serious work. you should consult your college for this...they can help you more than kids on the internet can...considering thats their job. good luck with everything.

I'm a senior at Marquette University and i'm majoring in biomedical sciences. It is one of the harder majors at my school, but getting the degree grants you pretty much any possibility in the medical field. My junior and senior years have been filled with hardcore med/science classes, but I am determined to get through it to get my undergrad degree.

I was looking into chiropractic for a while, but they have some real stingy entrance requirements and its just more time and money so I sort of gave up on that. After I graduate, I am looking into pharmaceutical sales or medical supply sales; they are two fastly-growing professions and there is a lot of $$$ in those industries

....back to studying microbiology for me :p

Dont say that, dont ever say that!!! Stay in school for as long as you possibly can. You can grow up later but for now just stay in school, being a grown up sux, or so I've been told.

Well you say you're interested in the medical stuff , here's a few things I can suggest to you .

First off , a semi-easy program is Paramedics . I know a few people that have taken it . The rate of pay is fairly good up here .

Now if you want to make some good money , I'd suggest getting into Nursing . Some people will laugh and say it's a " career for women" , but that is far from the truth . There are so many jobs available out there and the money you make could be endless . My buddy's sister's fiance is a nurse and got on with a Large company in Ottawa Canada and they're rolling in the money . He travels from different office highrise buildings and holds clinics for the staff . He also helps with showing them proper techniques to avoid injuries . He also does work for the Government . The career is a lot of work , overtime , etc , but if you're dedicated to it , it's a great career .

Like the others have said , Engineering is great , IF you LOVE math , if you want to think about math 24/7 and if you want to dream about math . I hated every single minute of my college engineering program , main reason why I'm not in that type of work . :ermm:

Another thing , if you don't want to go to school , you can always become a Tradesperson and start an apprenticeship program . Earn while you Learn !!!!!

One of my friends graduated 1st in his class at my school out of a class of about 700 which entitled him to a free UW education. He decided to go into Mech. Eng. and is in his second internship. He currently works at Polaris. Picture this: You and a team of other Mech. Eng. students get a brand new race sled and your job is to improve upon the existing foundation, AND YOU GET PAID, AND YOU GET COLLEGE CRETID!!!! Score.

That's my plan because I've already got the grades and will have straight A's in all of the hardest classes that my school offers (5 APs next year for me).

I'm a JR in Highschool now and I have no idea where I want to go academic wise. I was looking towards Mechanical Engineering because I would really like to design parts for quads and stuff,but I realized that the oppurtunity to do that isnt there. Now since that happened, I have no idea were to go. Im thinking a middle school or 9th grade teacher(dont know what kind). Heck I will be a gym teacher.....lol

What stingy reqs? Thats what im going into and all you need is a 2.5 GPA to get in and 6 credit hrs of biology's, 12 chem, 3 physics, and thats really the only hard stuff, there are more but they are general ed stuff...

The school I was considering looks at your grades. I wish it was just credits but when I read the fine print it just wasn't going to work for me; I don't have the time or money to retake classes I already passed to get higher grades. Some of my classes are so hard that I am content just getting through them, let alone getting good grades in them. Marquette is just very rigorous academically, I used to be a solid A student all throughout high school but here is a completely different story altogether :ermm:

What classes are you taking right now?

I have a total or 6 more required classes to take but I am taking 9 more including an independent study on Fuel cell powered RC cars :blah:

I got like a couple weeks to figure out what I want to do..I graduate with an Associates in December and I still cant think of anything that I would be good at. Of course it doesnt help when there isnt much college selection in the Houston area.

I'm majoring in Chemical Engineering, fortunately all my math is done except Engineering Physics II, that's next semester. I was fortunate to take AP Calc and AP Chem in HS and clep'd out of Chem I and Calc I. ChemE requires alot of hours, almost as much as Petroleum Eng. Not only that but they expect you to already have taken Calc I and Chem I before you even start college.

I chose ChemE because it's always at the top of the pay scale of new graduates, plus chemistry is cool and it comes easy to me. What I hate is the stupid sociology and physcology classes, they suck! But, my GPA is 3.86 so far so all is good.

My cousin is graduating in the spring with a degree in Petroleum Eng. He had 3 job offers, he just accepted one that offered him 88K/year with a 22K sign on bonus! I'm hoping for something similiar but we'll see.

what i did was wait it out untill i found a mid-upper division class i liked. When i foun a class i enjoyed i just took others in the same department and if i really enjoyed what i was learning then i talke to one of the advisors in that department. The advisor will tell you what carreer oportunities are in the field as well as all the other info you'd need. They're there for a reason so take advantage of it.

I was in the same boat just a couple months ago. I am now taking Criminal Justice and will be taking Police & SWAT training here in a couple years. I figured that I didn't want an office job or something boring.

Thermo is thogh, but I found Heat Transfer to be harder yet

Strength and Material sounds like our engineering materials course which I liked I had a good prof that made it a very practical class

Circuits comes easy to me, I think I got a high A

I hate the electromagnatic portion fo Physics, mostly because you will never use it

I slept through calc 3, but differential equations proceeded to kick my butt afterwards

By physical therapist , do you mean physiotherapist ... the people that help you out after injuries, surgeries , etc?

If that's what you mena , then maybe I can give you a bit of insight. I'm NOT a physiotherapist , but have spent much time around them ( not by choice) . My last physiotherapist was a pretty cool guy and gave me a lot of information about the career because I had an interest in it .

It's a LOT of tough schooling . These people can be classified as "doctors" , and most probably know more than some doctors out there . The guy that helped me out spent 6 years in school learning how to be a physiotherapist . Unlike some specialist that only need to know about certain areas , these guys have to know every part of the body , how it reacts to different movements, etc .

Also there is a lot of travel away from the office to conferences ... always learning new procedures and new equipment .

The money to be made as a physio therapist can be GREAT ... $100 000 a year no problem . My physio guy was in his late 20s or early 30s and owned 3 clinics . He wasn't struggling for money , but he sure worked hard for it .

I'd say if it's soemthing you're interested in , maybe make a trip to a local clinic and see if you can shadow someone for a day , ask as many questions as possible . If you can handle the schooling , I'd say Go for It !!!!!!

yea i think we are talking about the same thing lol i guesss they may have different titles in canada and yea im researching right now and it does look like alot of school. i dont know for sure if i can handle it or not. im also kinda looking at a nurse practitoner do you have any info in that?

I HATE school! However, you NEED it. I currently hold two degrees. I have recently decided to pursue becoming a lawyer. I was a police officer for 8 years. I have a criminal justice degree and a good working knowledge of law and how the court system works. I am currently an Instructor in the military and have a teaching degree as well. I plan on getting out and a lawyer makes more money than a teacher. Besides, i'd love to take the ex-wife back to court.:devil:

Another field that pays great is nuclear engineering. By other brother has a graduates degree in it and is making sick money.

I went the Business / marketing route and am seriously considering going back to school in order to start a different career.

physical therapist, this is what my parent does and i can say she got her schooling done with in 4 years, was a very tough schooling but she has told me there are alot of schools that are somewhat easy, she has one place and only takes in so many people as she is booked for the next several months. money is pretty good but your hands get tired very quickly! dont plan on starting big she had to work her way up, she started at sporting events messaging althetics for very little pay to none. took her several years before she started making really any money. she has always told other to not go to a school that passes alot of people, reason being is that you know it is a easier schooling. it is better to receive a diploma from a more intesive school. just makes you stand that much for out in a crowd
