what does blue smoke mean when its cold and doesn't when its hot i have a 1999 400ex stock bore with sparks x4 full exhaust
does it mean that the ring are going

its time to replace the rings.. if its blue smoke that means buring oil.. i have the same problem right now.. buy a compression tool.. they come in handy..

Cant do a compression test on a stock 400ex.....

I believe you can. You can do a compression test on all stock/modified motors.

Thought it had to be aftermarket cam or a leak down test to get an accurate reading due to decompressor assembly on stock cam. Was I mis-informed?




EDIT:

I guess I was, just found in an online manual that 120-128 psi for cylinder compression is in spec while testing. Sorry 'bout that. :p

Well, my motor is having the same problem right now. I just took it to the shop to get fixed. Hopefully won't be long before I get it back and won't cost to much. My 400ex just starting doing it all of a sudden. I took it to the Badlands a few weekends ago and then went to powerwash it. Drove it inside and it starting smoking like a freight train.
