I am currently running 20x10-9 on my quad and my other quad has 20x11-9. I am going to purchase new tires and wheels. What would the difference be if I ran 22 inch tires? Would it affect my top end much? Also which are better steel or aluminum wheels? I know that steel is heavier, but how much heavier are they and is that the only difference?

Thanks!

You'll have more top speed running the bigger tires..you'll most definitly need to change your gearing for it..I know I did...I'd also go with aluminum .190 rims..

Hmm...why would I have to change my gearing? Other than just changing the gearing to acheive a little more speed, would it hurt the engine to run with the larger tires?

Thanks!

it won't hurt the engine, but it won't feel as spunky as it does with 20" tires. a 14t counter sprocket is the right setup for the 22" tires. i've done it and i think rico has too, so we've experienced this ourselves.

unless i had a utility quad, i wouldn't use steel rims. .190 aluminum is pretty strong. if you need super strong (i.e., hitting big jumps or smashing into rocks constantly), then get some alum. wheels with reinforcement rings to keep from getting flat spots on the rims.

You will loose power on the bottom end. You need to drop 1 tooth on the front sprocket to compensate. Its hard on your clutch if you don't!

Ahh, makes sence! Thanks.

Now, is there any problems with running the same diameter in the front and the back. I noticed the 300Ex came stock with 22 inch tires all around. When I bought mine used it had 22's up front and 20's in back. What is the benefit of this. I also see that the 400EX comes stock with 22's up front and 20's in back.

Thanks again for all the help!

20" tires in the rear will handle better but 22" tires in the rear will work better in ruts and mud. For trails, run 22" or 23" tires in front.

hope this helps,
Jeff

A tire that says 20x10-9 means:

20 is the diameter of the tire.
10 is the width or distance across the tire.
9 would be the size of the rim or wheel.

Is this correct?

Thanks.

that's pretty much it (tire height x tire width - rim size)...

Thanks! Everything is crystal now!
