This is a good book to start with: Be Expert with Map and Compass!
Here is a link that has other books you may want to look at getting if you don't want to get the one that I recommended above. http://www.map-reading.com/
Here is a link to the search I did and you will find more places to go for more info. http://www.google.com/search?q=READING+TOPO+MAPS&rls=com.microsoft:en-us&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&startIndex=&startPage=1
Here is a link to mapping software that I like alot and you can upload and download tracks to a GPS from your computer, it also has other features: http://www.maptech.com/land/terrainnavigator/index.cfm?infopg=buy
A lot of people also like this software: http://shop.delorme.com/OA_HTML/DELibeCCtpSctDspRte.jsp?section=10045&minisite=10020
If you are interested in GPS's here is a link to start you off, I currently have the eTrex Vista® which I like a lot but that would be up to you to decide, you will have to research them and decide which is right for you: http://www.garmin.com/outdoor/products.html#mapping
