cutting out

The symptom is: In 3rd gear and 3rd gear only the engine cutts out from about 1/4 throttle to full throttle. It does not pop or crack in any way. It seems more like the rev limiter is kicking in.
In 1st, 2nd, 4th & 5th gears it runs 100% good from bottom to top.
Is there some kind of safety gizmo that may cause this problem or is it something else?

The gizmo is your CDI Box. You could get another one and see if that fixes the problem. They aren't cheap so maybe you have a friend with a pred that will let you use his/hers, or take it to the deal and see if they will test it with one of theirs. But I would think the CDI would cut out in all gears. The only other thing I can think of is your jetting.

Yes, try a different cdi. This sounds very familiar to what was going on with me this summer.
