Need ball joint help

Is it possible to over tighten ball joints when installing a-arms? When I put them on Hummers in the Army we just tightened them till you couldn't tighten them anymore. I put my Houser a-arms on last night and I did this but the rubber boots look really smushed. I don't want to cut them rubbing back and forth when I turn.

The way the taper is on the balljoint and spindle it would make it impossible to tighten them down to much, especially with hand tools.

I was just thinking with that metal the hubs are made out of being kind of soft it might reach the largest point of the taper and just keep pulling them though. I was tightening on them pretty hard.
