On a 400ex to put a gusset right behind the steering stem do you have to cut the old one off?

I made a triangle gusset that fit right over that open spot where your arrow is pointing.

You actually want to gusset the area in front of the stem bar. The force going forward from the bars is what causes this area to crack.

The stock gusset that the arrow is pointing to is already partly cracked......... should i just leave that alone and just put one in the front

I would at least weld it back up.

the weld isnt cracked its the actual solid peice of metal on the gusset..... my friends has the same crack but just not as big

Weld the crack or you could get a thin piece of metal and overlap it.
