virus possibly?

hey guys I am having some computer problems....

It seems that anything I download onto the desktop...is not showing up, and my computer has become ungodly slow. I currently have no antivirus...and I know its a must, I have just had the $ to re-new my subscription. Any ideas?

when did this start happening? if it was only a couple days or something then do a system restore if you havent saved anything too significant.
