Mixing oil weights???

Will mixing one quart 10w-30 Gn4 oil with 1 quart 20w-50 Gn4 oil cause any problems in a 400ex motor? It seems like it would give you a 15w-40. I have never really heard anything about mixing oils and my buddy says you can but I thought I would come and ask the experts on here before I considered it.

I do it. It cant hurt any thing by mixing.

That would probably be the number 1 reason not to do anything, because slow does it.

It won't cause any problems mixing different weights as long as you aren't mixing synthetics with regular oil.

I mix 2 litres of esso XD-3 0w-40 synthetic diesel oil and 500 ml of walmart tech 2000 15w-40 dino diesel (both only available in Canada) and get great results. You can mix synthetics and non synthetics without a problem. Many people still don't understand synthetic oil.

Yes, enlighten us on why you can mix synthetic with non-synthetics? Last time I checked it was a big no-no. I don't know if they've somehow changed the properties of synthetics to be able to mix properly without creating hazardous results.

Why couldnt you mix synthetic and dino oil. What do you think semi-systhetic oil is?

Depends on the synthetic.

Lower grade and older synthetics would ball-up/gum-up when mixed with dino. Not a good thing.

More modern, higher quality synthetics like AMSOIL will mix with dino just fine.

It's all chemistry.

AMSOIL Formula 4-Stroke® Power Sports is compatible with conventional and synthetic motor oils. Mixing AMSOIL motor oils with other oils, however, will shorten the oil life expectancy and reduce the performance benefits. AMSOIL does not support extended drain intervals where oils have been mixed.

Aftermarket oil additives are not recommended for use with AMSOIL motor oils.


The real question is why the heck would you want to? It's only like 3 quarts to fill an atv.

If you have a bottle of synthetic from 10 years ago then I would say no, don't mix it with dino. New synthetics are much better and are completely compatible with dino. Like architects mentioned, when you buy a synthetic blend what do you think it is? Magic potion? No its dino and synthetic mixed together. Although there is no regulation on how much synthetic has to be in a blend to call it a blend. I mix in the 500ml of dino so that I can get 2 changes out of a 4l jug of XD-3.(warrior takes 2.5 litres) Basically its a convenience thing.

I just always find if funny that people are willing to spend $1500 on their motors, $3000 on suspension, $400 on a pair of nerfs, bling, etc.... and then cheap out maintenance items like lube, air filter oil, gaskets, brake lines, brake pads, drive, etc...

Then again they probably don't have any money left after the upgrades.. lol.

Who are you saying is cheap? Me? Do some research on XD-3, you'll find thats its one of the worlds finest oils. For the price it is the finest. Its cheaper than alot of dino oils and is a true PAO synthetic that will outperform just about everything.

I have read on many synthetic label's that say compatible with all motor oil.
