Okay guys. I've come across a pretty good deal on a 2004 YFZ450 with a few mods. Nothing special. Price is $5,000 CAD. He says it's only had 10 tanks of gas since new. Doesn't seem to have any visible boot rub, scuffing, etc. Please fill me in on what to check for, I am 450 retarded.
Pics are as follows

Only thing I think it has is: Nerfs, pipe, bumper, and graphics. I'm not sure.

All input is appreciated. Im a little weary of them. Primarely I was buying it to do a flip. (no, not a backflip.)
i'd get it...i know the yfz up in canada is a lot if i recall correct, $5000cad doesnt seem half bad

he says 10 tanks of fuel max. basically he split up with his wife or something and he just wants to get rid of it.. i'm going to speak with him more tonight about it.

10 tanks might be a little low. im not sure what terrain he rides but from the scuff marks on the bottom of the a arms it looks like more than 10 tanks. either way, for the price and the quality of it i would get it for sure. i love my 04 to death, couldnt be happier.

the rear tires look like they have a little more time on them than that. maybe its just the terrain it was ridden on though.

I thought you wanted a 660r? That seems like a good price. I'd definitly go for it. I bought a quad off a guy with the same kinda wear on the a arms and it only had a few hours on it and the guy lived in town and never rode it. I dont know what makes them wear like that.

I did want a 660r. I still do. This just came along and the price is actually much cheaper than what an 02, or even an 03 sells for.
Is there anything that COMMONLY wears out on these????
What kind of things do I check.... I know to check the swinger & a-arms and brakes and what not but I'm worried about the motor. That is the biggest thing I want to be sure of. It can't have much wear on the engine with the stock tires with good tread left on them, and almost no scuffs and scratches...

I don't get it?
I would perticularly like to hear from some YFZ450 owners, and get some input on what they have had break, and what is they would definately check if they were to buy another one.

I have had 5 YFZ's. Sold the oldest one and the newest '06 is a parts bike......................
We race them hard every weekend. If this is not a race bike, then I would pull the filter out and look at it. I would also pull the screen at the bottom of the oil tank. Look for metal shavings. Also look for water in the oil. Smell the oil for a burnt clutch aroma. Do a leak down test and make sure you don't have more than 15% - 20%.
Check the "weep" hole at the bottom of the water pump for coolant dripping.
I would pull the filter off and inspect the intake tube for sand or dirt. That will give you a good idea of how well the filter was maintained.
Look at the ends of the cables where they go into the sheath. Look for fraying and look for lube on the cables.
Look closely at the battery connections and look for the cables breaking where they hook to the battery.
Check the wiring harness in the rear, where it goes next to the subframe, and look for excessive rubbing and maybe bare wires. Also check it in the left front of the frame, sorta above the radiator.
Pull the spark plug and see how it was running.
Check the front motor mounts for cracks.
Pull on the rear grab bar and shake it sideways to look for loose swing arm pivot bearings or carrier bearings.
Look closely at the swing arm for cracks. They look like someone wrote on it with a pencil.
From the rear of the swing arm, look at how well the carrier maches up to the swingarm. If there are any gaps, then the carrier is bent or broken.
That should about cover it, other than looking at the normal wear and tear items.
BTW........ I wouldn't pay more than $2500 USD (I don't know what that is in CAD) for a used, mostely stock '04 YFZ.
Brand new, left over '06's are going for $5k

I havn't seen one go for that cheap yet:confused: ($2500 that is) Sure, left over 06's may be that cheap in some places, but they seem to hold their value better than that. I would probably pay around $3300 usd for that yfz asuming it is in as good of shape as the pictures show. The best price I've seen for an 04 was $2995.

Unfortunately the ATV market in Ontario is not as big as I would like. With that said, the ATVs cost much more to purchase, and there are fewer of them around. $5000 for an 04, believe it or not, In Ontario is rare, if not unheard of. I have watched the prices of quads on trader.ca for years, I know what sells for what.
You can expect to pay $10,500 OTD for a new YFZ here.

Ok......... I was just saying "I" wouldn't pay more than $2500 for a used '04 YFZ. But then again I would strip most of the stuff off of it and update it. That would mean another 2-3k in parts, then you would be at $5500, so I would just buy an '06 instead.
It's really worth whatever you want to pay for it.

the cheapest YFZ that i've seen was $5500 or $5600 CDN and that was a totaly beat 04. the prices of quads in canada stays very high. i see 04 450R's sell for $7000 used! and YFZ's around that 6000- 7000 mark.
it looks to be in good cond. and for $5000 thats a pretty good deal.

I'd give him no more that 4500 for that (mostly because that's what I got for mine, and mine was quite a bit nicer than that) It has to have more than 10 tanks of fuel through it. Your decision though, but I'd offer him 4500 for it especially if your plan is just to flip it. You'll have a hard time getting more than five for that.
Got nads?

MAKE sure to take it for a good test ride and go through all the gears. Nothing worse then buying a used atv with tranny problems. I agree with everyone else who said to check the air filter, oil, frame fo any cracks especially around the front shock mounts. Good luck!

He does not have the title, I have chosen to refuse the machine. He was going to let it go for 4600.

Good choice. I forgot about a clear title. That's probably the most important thing to look for.

Fully built from parts off e-bay and only cost him $4500... seems a tad shady.
I think you made a good call on not going through with the purchase.
