Hey everyone,

What year 250R was it that had red plastic with the headlight in the plastic, and said 250R with a stripe behind it in white? I have always thought this was the best looking quad made and would like to start looking for one to rebuild. Also, is it still possible to get the plastics for these bikes? Thanks

the 88 was red, 89 was white, but they both had the headlight in the plastic...

yes you can still buy the plastic, but it is pricey for the platic and decals...

Thanks for the replies. The red 88 you have is pure sweetness:D When I was young (I'm 33 now) I always wanted one and couldn't afford it. I hope to build one this year as a project, so I'll probably be bugging you guys frequently;) Where would be the best place to look for one, maybe not in the best of shape, but not totally crap if you know what I mean? Also, where would be the best place to find parts and are the old legend's parts hard to find? I guess I'll try e-bayto start. Thanks for all the help.

Yes the 88 was the red one, however you can make any year 250R look like that. You can still purchase factory replacement plastics from Honda, and maier makes replacement fenders and hoods to duplicate the 88, However the headlight itself is the hard item to find. You can also buy the graphics from ebay although they arent originals but look pretty much identical.

Hey also I have never ridden a 250R. I had a two stroke bike hen young and loved it. Will the R still run fairly competively with the new 4 strokes such as my Z? The speed is not why I want to build one, but rather the nostalgia and awesome looks. Just curious as to how they compare to today's new 4 strokes powerwise and handling wise. Thanks.

Chad, I think you need to go ride a 250R. . . if it's properly tuned at all, you will be very impressed by the power and handling if you are asking whether it will "keep up" to a z400.

For your project, are you looking to stay stock or do you just want the asthetics of the '88R??
If you look to the aftermarket for performance, the boundaries are limited only by your budget :-)

Mainly the aesthetics, nostalgia value (King of ATV's in the 80's), and two stroke is what draws me to this bike. When I was young I always wanted one (had a Suzuki LT185 and Kawi 220 Bayou). It would be something to do with the kids, other atv friends, and more of a conversation/collector's piece. Never raced and taken on rough trails. I'm going to start looking around and will probably be on here bugging you all for info:) Thanks again for the advice.

i know how you feel... i messed up something in my tranny last weekend on my R, and will be getting a yfz tomorrow... although i will fix my R sometime in the near future, it will be a few months..

thats one thing i like about my R- showing up to the hill and being the only one on an R, and always having people come check out your bike... and then even more after you smoke all the newer bikes...

everybody has a 450...
