View Full Version : Cody's 400ex MX build up thread

Pappy
11-04-2006, 06:19 AM
I will keep this thread updated as the build takes place as we turn a stock 2005 400ex into a MX'r!

As the quad was prior to this build, the only additions were some mx tires, hand gaurds and a bumper.

Pappy
11-04-2006, 06:23 AM
The 450R shocks will be retained, and C&D Racing will revalve the fronts to suit the mx riding that this quad will be set up for. The rear shock will also be re-done and retained.

Walsh +2 standard travel arms, a HMF slip on, Hipers, ITP Holeshots, a CFM oil tank and a few other small aftermarket parts will be added along with a Quad-Tech scooped hood to dress up the looks.

Pappy
11-04-2006, 06:26 AM
AC standard nerfs will be added for safety, along with a Pro Armor kill switch. An extended axle will bring the rear end in spec.

The quad was disassembled last night and I will begin working on parts today. This should be a relatively short build and I hope to have it completed in 2 weeks or so, but I wouldnt count on it.

Pappy if your gonna go walsh standard travel why not just go like a lonestar long travel front end with elka or something of that nature.

LOL...because I am not made of money and found the walsh stuff for dirt dirt dirt cheap:D

He will more then likely move to a 450 in 2008 so no need to dump ungodly amounts of money into the 400.

11-04-2006, 09:18 AM
Yea i had my 400ex for a year put jrd long travel a arms custom axis etc etc it was a nasty 400ex but i got a 450 the next year so it was kinda dumb to dump all of that money into it but it made me a better rider.

We still have it, but the 400 has more power for him to clear some of the bigger jumps at BPG. He tried the 70 footer 20 times and the 300 did not have enough to get over it.

All parts except the frame and sub are stripped and prep work has begun. Cody is shown here taping his hubs that will be coated tonight.

I gusseted his frame using one of Bare Performance's 17 point gusset kits, and bobbed the subframe so a removable grab bar can be installed. I should have it stripped and coated I am hoping by wednesday.

Acctually if you go on their site, look under "250R style long body"

"Fits he following ATVs..... 250R, 400EX, LTZ400, KFX400, CANNONDALE and a few others, so call if you want them for a different model, they may be available.

+3" wider per side

Uses a 19" long shock

Fully adjustable cator and camber"

They look exactly like the ones pappy has, im pretty sure they are standard travel for a 400ex, but on the walsh 250r/hybrid frames, they had the upper shock mounts higher than stock so that made them long travel.

Pappy
11-06-2006, 01:06 PM
Correct, the Walsh 250R and 400ex arms are one in the same. The Walsh frames had adjustable upper shock mounts.

it seems in late august he sprained his left knee. he never complained and never asked for medical help. About 2 weeks ago it was really bothering him so we went for xrays. He had a bad sprain, and tore most of the ligaments in his knee. We have to now go to a specialist because they think a syst has formed on his knee.

Pappy
11-18-2006, 08:48 PM
I use two different companies for my stripping. 1 is used for parts/frames that are powdercoated because they have a burn off oven.

The other uses a conventional media blasting set up. This is where I dropped off codys frame. It was scheduled to be done last week, but non-stop rain prevented much work being done. It is hard to get things rolling when its damp and wet, so the shops just shut down. I went by there friday and dropped off 7 more frames and I am scheduled to pick up all frames on tuesday. Codys is ready to go once I get it back so i have every expectation it will be finished and reassembly can begin around Turkey day.

I believe all parts that are to be coated are completed sans his new oil tank which will be done tomorrow. All I have to do is wait on the shocks and a few other parts to arrive and she will be done.

I think white plastic would be awesome. The build is coming together great. Brain fart: i think any color plastic would look great. Have you considered yellow, blue, etc...??

I wish i still had the time to do this kinda stuff. Ive had no time at all to do anything with it over the last year, not even ride it:( . College is fun but i miss riding. Hopefully all goes well in the spring and i wont have to put any big bucks in it and ill beable to ride again.:)

deffinatley alot of black, but i look at it like this....

if a part is broken or damaged, i can replace the part and match the powder coat, i cant always do that with other colors. when he snaps the frame i can redo it and not have to redo everything else to match, or when the arms get rough they will be easy enough to recoat and it will all still flow.

Looks damn good Ken I like it. Quads don't always have to be flashy to look good.

I would say it looks fine the way it is. No need to always depend on someone else when you have the things needed to get the job done yourself.

No not saying that you do, just never really seen anyone that found the stock bars to be a comfortable fit!? Plust I've never had a set of stock bars last more than one moto without getting bent down to the gas tank:mad:.

Anyways love the EX, those color combos are awesome

Looks awesome. I am a huge fan of the black/red color schemes. I like the way the spindles, a-arms, and calipers look. I think I would do the calipers red on mine so they stick out, but it looks great.

+2 with 3:2 offset rims? cuz it looks alot wider than +2

Pappy
12-25-2006, 05:44 AM
Its 48 inches wide(+2 arms 4-1 rims) I believe I know what I built:p If I remeber correctly the scribe from Walsh on the arms was +2

Pappy
12-25-2006, 05:47 AM
It may appear wider because the suspension is set up for mx and has a 7 inch ride height. Works very well I may add
