WOW! i have seen pistons come apart, but never to that degree.

But i have seen worse damage. a rod on a YFZ snapped, taking out the entire motor. Took out a chunk of both cases, teh bottom of the cylinder, took the crank out of true, busted the piston, and teh rod slappign around in the case took out so tranny gears as well. teh only usuable parts on teh motor were the clutch cover, the flywheel cover, and some misc. parts under them.

well its a kx-500.............and that was still the stock cylinder with no sleeve in it.........the only thing damage is what you see.....bottom-end is still good.......that crank is somethin serious...its a 70.8mm and it does not have a dent or bent anywhere.

all he'll need is a new piston.......the machine shop i take my parts to said they can bore it put a sleeve in then bore the sleeve.....about $450 and he'll be ready to go.

if this was a 4-stroke......it would have probably cost well over a grand.

when mine went it cost me $1400

I know how to fix your problem, if you take a sxf 450 piston and cylinder and put it on your 500, it will never have problems again. You have to make sure your run 2:1 mix antifreeze and water though or it fries the rings bad! You can run a stock crank in it though they line up perfect and put on a four stroke header and a two stroke silencer. Or you could just buy a ktm 450 and not worry about it. Take it from me, I'm Mike Alessi.

No I'm being for real. When i first got on a 500 in '04 it seized up after landing of a triple. My friend that was parked beside us had his ktm 450f torn apart and as a joke we took his cylinder and put it on my kx. Suprisingly it fit perfectly fine and we continued to rebuild it. I ran a practice on it and it ran just as smooth as it did before.
