i have a 250ex that always runs a little warm, and i am looking at a 400ex. also, whenever i ride my cousins raptor 350 or my friends 300ex, the heat is just rolling off the motor. any tips much appreciated

Oil cooler. 400ex has one though. Some will add the inline, ribbed oil line coolers.. they actually help some.
They will always be toasty and run hotter than a water cooled.. but a good oil cooler helps a lot. And, stop driving so slow.. lol.

Go faster and keep the mud cleaned off your engine and pipe. Having a clean quad will help it to be cooler.
