What type of ATV? I'm assuming you are referring to a 450R since you posted in the 450R section.

Now the question is, Engine oil, or tranny oil?

For engine oil...I prefer 10W-40. Amsoil AMF 10W-40 synthetic 4-stroke oil to be exact. I use it in both the transmission, and engine. It has no friction modifiers.

For engine oil. I've heard of people running everything from 20w-40 to 5w-30. Just make sure it is a high quality oil. If the oil contains Molybdenum, thats certainly a plus. Do NOT use an "Energy Conserving" oil.

For transmission oil, most recommend Honda HP tranny oil. It seems to have great results. Make sure the transmission oil you use has NO moly, and NO friction modifiers.

If all else fails, consult your service manual. It tells you exactly what type of oil to use, and for what temperatures.

Also, I believe "lumi" has been doing some research on oils. Hopefully he will have some things to add.
