Piston install and cylinder honing?

I've gotten everything I need for my winter upgrade. Stage 1 cam and a Wiseco 11:1. For an 02, my quad really does not have "a lot" of time on the engine for the time of its existence. I know there is probably some irregularities in the cylinder, but is honing : at the minimum: required when you install a new piston. Has anybody installed a new piston without doing this, and what is the whole process of honing a cylinder; if hopefully, that is all I need.

Yes you have to hone it,.... honing the cylinder makes the cylinder walls somewhat rough so when the new rings break in they become seated to the cylinder walls. New rings are not perfectly round and need to be worn down to the shape of the cylinder walls which is caused all during the breakin process which is why the oil is usualy silverish after the first change. If you dont hone the cylinder your rings will not have a complete seal all the way around the cylindr walls causing loss of compression.

What all is involved in honing, and is it possible to do it in your own shop without going to a dealer or specialist.

Depending where you are in ohio,you can drop by the spot and i'll hone your cylinder for you,you cab see for yourself how its done.A hone just cleans up the bore,it wont take any material out of the bore,it more or less just deglazes it.;)

wheres your shop my friend? I'd do it if it is close. What does a hone usually cost for a small cylinder? i'm guessing it isn't much.

Wiseco sells flex-hone brushes that'll do the job. If I remember mine were about $40 or $50 each. You'll only need one.

I dont have a shop i just have my garage.I call it my "shop" though.
