i have a hinson adjustable timing counter balancer, what timing should i run with 100 octane av gas 210psi compression, and a paul turner race pipe with porting.it came with the quad and is at 1 degree retard,can i advance it some?

Try it at 2 or 3 clicks addvance & invest in a good timming light to make sure you dont go too high.
Old anilog ignition will jump around on you some, thats why you dont want to go too high.

Neil, give us some insight on ignition timing. I'll admit, this is one of my weak areas, I only know the basic shape of the timing curve.

How is the timing light going to help him? If he is right at the edge, he's going to see detonation at full load, not while he's idling on a stand in his garage. If he DOES detonate, he backs off a smidge.

Think of ignition timming in the same manner as you would high compression.
Higher you go in compression, harder it is to kick the engine over & harder it is on rotating internal parts.
Higher you go on ignition timming harder it is on pistons & cranks just like the compression being too high.
