I have a motor or 2...or 3 that are apart and I don't want the parts to rust...they are covered in WD40, but shop is not heated. Can I do anything else, or am I doing good?

buy yourself a couple of deep storage bins and put the parts in there along with some of those "desi-pak" dehumidity packages.

clean all the wd-40 off and cover in motor oil and then seel the parts in a bag or bin!

86 quad R- The desi-pak's keep out the moisture?

Red2004 TRX450R- you know WD40 is oil right? lol Thank you though!!

yea the desi-paks keep/take out moisture.

wd-40 is infact a rust penatrant but, will cause bare metals to oxydize. ask any gun smith. they hate it lmao

WD-40 is not an oil, it's a water displacer and will displace any other type of liquid. It's the main reason why you don't use WD-40 on your chain because it removes the lubrication.

I would cover all your parts with motor oil like red2004 TRX450R said.

trx450- That's a good point-I would not run that in my motor as the oil, Thank you

Taods400- WD40 is an oil, its called penetrating oil for a reason, thanks though

put them in a big box and take them inside;)

Very good idea, but have limited space inside and tons of parts....though now you said that I think I'll bring in the good stuff, like my good cam and ported head....maybe even a full bottom end lol THANKS

My name is Toadz400, and not to start anything but can you find anywhere where anyone or even on the can itself, refers to WD-40 as a penetrating oil?

It's just a common known fact toadz400, but I'm sure we both have better things to do than argue w/ ea. other. Anyways, I'm goin with the engine oil then bringing them inside for a winter hibernation. Thanks everyone!

WD-40 is not an oil. It is a water displacer, rust penetrant, and lubricant.

WD-40 litterally stands for Water Displacer, 40th attempt.

All we can do is try to warn you.

You'd be much better off using 50 weight motor oil. Which it sounds like you're doing. :D

Thank you;) .

Any type of oil will work good for keeping rust off. I have a homemade ATV stand that I had sitting outside for the past year and the spots that I had oil spilled on were completely rust free.

Hey good to know. Sorry Toadz400 I was wrong. I'm putting them in oil anyway.

Ya my uncle sprayed some tools with wd-40 before he put them in a shed and it actually rusted. My guess is the stuff is water base or something. Oil is the way to go.
