I just bought a '88 R with the 310 non-pv big bore. I dont have it with me now, but I am wondering what should I be advised of?

This is my first big bore so I dont know what to do. I dont know how it runs either, I bought it on ebay.

Do all the 310's require race fuel? Will 93 octane plus a octane booster be sufficient?

Blacker - you have a 310 right? Is it pv or non-pv? How do you have it set up? What fuel do you run and where do you get it?

A few mods the R has are 38 A/S carb and FMF fatty. Will this set up work ok for trails?

not all 310s need race fuel, it just depends on your compression and your head...

The guy I bought it from said it needs 110 octane. I haven't checked the compression, as I dont have the quad yet. It is a stock head, but I dont know if it has been milled.

you can change the head gasket(if its a thin one) to a stock trx one, that will lower compression, or put in a 85 atc gasket which stock wa right at the line for race gas. Above 190lbs, you need race gas. upper 180-190 is the fine line.

First thing I'll do when I get it is check the compression.

If its above 190 psi, and I dont have access to race gas - what is a good alternative?

I suppose AV gas.... some people like it, some don't. I say run 93 octane and make the compression about 175...

I use AV gas at 175 psi...probably useless but I find it burns cleaner. If your compression is too high and you don't feel like paying $7+ a gallon for C12, just get a trx head gasket to lower the compression. When I first got my bike it had 205 psi with the thin CR headgasket. I changed it to a trx head gasket and it went down to 160.

What is AV gas?

AV gas is aviation gas for planes. some people have had good luck with it. AV gas made my 310 run horribly so I run race gas

I run AV gas in my scrambler and my dad runs it in his harley...not sure the compression on each but i know they run a lot better with it than regular '93...each have had a good bit of mods done and need a higher octane but i live right next to the county airport and for 3.50 a gallon its nice...never had any problems with it and its a nice octane right in between premium with octane booster and race fuel if you dont' have too high of a compression

AV gas is straight gas, no additives mixxed in, air craft dont need additives in the fuel like a land based engine needs.
Your dads Harley might be ok & then maybe not.
Land based engines need additives in the fuel to support the valve train like lubes to lube the stems & guides & stuff to cushion the valves when seating aginst the seats.

also av gas has addivitaves in it so it doesn't freeze at the high altitudes...

You could trade / sell your top end you have on there now. If you do, i might be interested in buying it/ trading for it. i have a stock cylinder bored 0.040 over, duncan port and polish

I may consider selling my top end. It depends...
