View Full Version : Too much oil???

What happens if there is too much oil in the oil tank? Oil is well over the full marks even after oil cycled through the motor. Could this force oil some where it shouldn't be? How much is suppose to go in there?

What would cause a 400ex to run hot? Should spit nearly instantly boil off of the side of the motor after a few min of riden...:ermm:

Thanks a TON for any feedback!!!

Too much oil is not good - luckily there's a very easy fix. Just drain the excess until the correct level is achieved.

You may be running too lean if it is heating up that quickly. Make sure there is no excessive debris build up in the fins so that ample air flow is achieved. Check your plug color to check to see if it is running lean.

Hope this helps.

Chances are you're probably running lean or you may have installed the oil filter backwards. Check the obvious first.

The oil filter can be backwards? It's a k&n if memory serves me correct;y.... can i easily tell if i pull it back out?

Yes, the oil filter can be backwards. Mine always have some writing on the filter to tell you which way it goes in.

With regard to the oil level, you need to make sure you check the level properly. Start the quad and let it idle for a about 4 or 5 minutes. Then check the level with the dipstick. Do not screw it in when checking the oil level. I believe the manual tells you how to check it properly. The oil level cold will be lower than the oil level warm. So, if it is okay with the quad cool, it will be too full when warm.

If after ensuring the filter is in correctly the bike still seems to run too hot, check the color of the plug (you want it to be tan not black-too rich or white-too lean). You may need to rejet as it may be too lean.

The manual says to let it sit a couple minutes after shut down, then check it.

that's so burnin hot oil doesn't come shootin out if it's grossly overfilled

I don't know if your joking, but the real reason is to get an accurate read of the oil level.

I normally just put an even 2 quarts in and that seems to be fine. I believe the manual says 1.95.:blah:

I put a full 2 in mine and no problems. .05 quarts shouldn't pose a problem (=

it just give the oil a chance to settle instead of being stuck on everything inside the motor.. cause if you check you oil right after you shut it off and check it after it sits for a couple minutes you will notice the level will rise..

more than likely the reason it will rise is the oil draining from your cooler back into the reservoir....

I've noticed on my 99 that when I drain the oil tank and the crankcase it takes a little more than 2 quarts to put it to full on the stick. Anyone else notice that?
